I built an i7 6700K, 32gb 3000mhz ram, evga ftw 1070, asus maximus hero VIII mobo, 960evo ssd before going to my school. My vray render time for gpu is 2:10ish and about same for cpu. I'm gonna try it out on redshift as soon as my school acquires it.

How's Octane and Modo? I havent touched Modo, Octane, Blender, Rhino and C4D just yet. lol Vray is complicated but it does magic. Substance Painter is amazingly easy. I heard Renderman is free to use. Im still messing with arnold but there are UV and render glitches that i havent figured out how to fix.

DAMN... definite GOALS for myself too. I barely on my 2nd term at a 3D school and my comp is slowly reaching its limitations with my i7 6700K. I do have a 1070 FTW and 960 evo SSD. What programs you use and what are your rendering times? I'm so curious! I mainly use Maya 2016 ext 2 and 2017, Vray 3.4-3.5 and Substance Painter 2.

This is my set up:
i7-6700K, Noctua - NH-U9S, Asus - MAXIMUS VIII HERO, G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 32GB DDR4-3000, Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2-2280 SSD, EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB FTW Gaming ACX 3.0,
Antec - EarthWatts Platinum 650W 80+ Platinum, Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit, (2) Noctua - NF-A8 PWM 32.7 CFM 80mm Case Fans.

Total: $1788.60

I asked you those questions before I built the PC and got the programs for my PC. lol haha I usually use the ones in school. I use Maya, Vray, Substance Painter and the PC works great. I did notice some limitations though. You're right on the 64 gb.

32 GB is minimum for 3D use. I felt the limits with 16 gb. Also, get 6 core and above if u can. 1070 will do just fine. SSDs definitely help.

I'm a 3D student as well and I already put together an i7 6700k, Asus ROG hero VIII, evga ftw 1070, gskill 32gb ram 8x4(i know the mobo supports only dual channel)lol, samsung 960 evo 500gb SSD. I haven't truly tested my build in Vray renderings just in after effects, photoshop, and building models in maya. The ones in school are powerful AF. I was wondering how your build(same as mine) fairs up against rendering times?
