We rely on the manufacturers for CPU support information. Asus currently only lists the 3990x as compatible.

I would look into external drives that you can remove from their shell. Some require an extremely easy mod to use on consumer hardware but you can easily double your storage for nearly the same price.

For example, I grabbed 12TB drives for 180 each for my system.

For my first NAS I used FreeNAS which was really nice but definitely not too friendly for linux noobs (like me). It was a big pain to troubleshoot when something went wrong.

For my latest server I'm using UnRAID which suffers a bit on performance but was significantly easier to configure and allows you to add more drives at any time with little hassle.

The main downside to UnRAID is that it isn't free but the base option for up to 6 drives is only 60 dollars.

The hardest part is going to be smart home connectivity and that's where I'd focus my research if its a sticking point for you.

VM gaming is still mostly an awful experience.
