Great Intel Gaming Build

Description

CPU

At this budget, we're running an Intel i5-7500. Any modern i5 will perform admirably for nearly all gaming needs. The i5-7500 includes a stock cooler, so 3rd-party cooler isn't necessary. Since we aren't overclocking our CPU, the stock cooler will be sufficient in keeping temperatures acceptable.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric filter to constantly select the best-priced motherboard while meeting selected criteria. In this case, we are filtering for B250 chipsets and 4 DDR4 DIMM slots for future expansion. The compatibility engine will filter out anything not compatible with the build. The motherboards are also capable of using the CPU's integrated GPU, in case you need to RMA your GPU or are waiting for a sale or upgrade.

Memory

Memory needs are slowly but constantly increasing, and we want to stay ahead of the curve. To this end we're using a parametric filter to choose a 16GB kit of memory within Intel's recommended specifications at the best price. The filter will only select 2x8GB kits, allowing us to leave room for extra DIMMs for future expansion.

Storage

We're use parametric filters to incorporate an SSD with at least 500GB of space. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to add or remove capacity to your heart's desire.

GPU

For our GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 is one of the best price for performance cards on the market and an absolute powerhouse. The GTX 1070 will provide a consistent 60fps on many demanding games like Battlefield 1 at Ultra at 1080p, and even 1440p for some games like Shadow of Mordor. For those interested in VR, the GTX 1070 will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

The filter also avoids video cards that are considered "mini" length, as those will not cool as effectively or quietly, and the small savings to be had with them isn't really worth it with this budget.

You can choose to use this filter instead, if you want to include the smaller cards for any reason.

Case

The build will be housed in the Cooler Master MasterBox 5 mid tower. The MasterBox 5 features 2 USB 3.0 front panel ports and has room for video cards of any length. It includes a PSU shroud to hide unsightly cables, plenty of bays for storage drives, and it has room for multiple radiators. There are also plenty of cable management holes.

PSU

For our power supply, we're using a parametric selection of well-reviewed semi or fully modular units, all of which are 80+ Gold certified or above and can provide plenty of power for this build.

You're likely only going to need a screw driver to get everything assembled. All the cables should be included with the parts.

Does anyone know if you need to buy additional fans for this build?

The official case website says it comes with 2 pre-installed fans. 120mm in the front and rear. It should be enough to get you going and you could upgrade for better cooling in the future if needed.

For it to be wirless you would have to add a USB or get a wireless card I assume?

A PCI wireless card would in most cases be faster than a USB wireless dongle. You also don't want to lose one of your 5x USB 2.0/3.0 ports, since they seem to fill out quicker than you think.

Hi RobsterL, since the wireless PCIe card is only x1, you can put that card in any available PCIe slot (x1, x4, x8, x16) on your motherboard and it'll work just fine.

I have this setup and struggle to get frames much higher than 60 @ 1440p in a lot of AAA titles. setting graphics on low helps. 6700/7700+1080 is a much more suitable combo if he wants to push the 144hz envelope (typically people wanting this are FPS gamers not moba also).

At 1440p, things become much more GPU bound, so the difference between a 7700k and a 1600 would be 5 fps at most...

Upgrading to an i7 is almost never worth it for any gaming needs, you can upgrade however to the i5-7600K instead, or rather spend the saved money upgrading the graphics card.

Dual boot doesn't depend on hardware to work, so it is supported by every computer. However, if your dual booting scheme includes installing Linux under UEFI, you may have to make some changes to your BIOS like the ones in this guide to get everything working.

Hey, is there any way to make this build a little cheaper (around the $1000 range)? like only using a 150GB SSD and a 2TB HDD? My main concern is to keep the CPU and GPU strength but make it a little easier on my wallet.

Storage is always up to the builder. While SSD's will start up applications muh faster, they are simply a convenience and not a need. A hard drive will be cheaper, and will work fine if youre okay with slower start up speeds.

Dumb question, but I'm assuming I could spend less than $100 more to swap the GTX 1070 with a GTX 1080 and it would still work fine?

Also how is the noise level on this build? I'm looking for something whisper quiet.

The "B250M GAMING PRO Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard" could possibly be a better choice since I don't think we will need to upgrade to anything over 16gb of ram for a long time.
