Build Guide

Magnificent AMD Gaming Build

by ThoughtA

NOTE: A more recent version of this guide is available here.

Description

CPU and Cooler

The Ryzen 7 2700 is an octo-core processor that utilizes AMD SMT technology for a total of sixteen threads. This CPU is one of the top models of the new, 2nd-generation Ryzen processors.

To take fuller advantage of the overclockability, we are including the Fractal Design Celsius S24 240mm liquid cooler.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric filter for X470 ATX motherboards. Our compatibility and pricing engines will automatically select the best-priced motherboard that is compatible with the rest of the build.

Memory

For memory, we're filtering for the best-priced 2x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM with a heatsink. We've limited it to DDR4-2800 and faster speeds, as Ryzen CPUs scale well with higher frequency memory.

Storage

We're also using a parametric filter that will actively select the best-priced SSD of roughly 500GB capacity. Additionally, we're including a 3TB mechanical hard drive in a parametric filter for things like storing media and extra games. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to change the capacity to your heart's desire.

GPU

Our GPU is the very popular GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. This is currently one of the fastest single GPU video cards in the market - you may want to look into a 120-144Hz and/or 2560x1440 resolution monitor for this bad boy. The parametric filter is set for the best-priced 1080 Ti available, but feel free to click the "From parametric filter" link to browse our listing of 1080s Tis. For those interested in VR, the GTX 1080 Ti will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

Case

All of our parts are on display in the Thermaltake View 31 TG. This tempered glass-sporting case includes multiple RGB fans and a glass front window, as well.

The View 31 TG features 2x front panel USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0 ports, and cable management holes and tie-offs to help your build look cleaner. It can also fit full-sized video cards.

PSU

Powering the build is a sparse selection of some of the most well-reviewed PSUs available - all without breaking the bank. All of them are certified 80+ Gold and fully-modular.

May I ask why to 2700 instead of the 2700x? I'm asking because I'm building my first PC with AMD and wasn't sure if there was much difference

SirGryphon 2 points 7 months ago

The 2700 is basically the same, except different clocks and the X means that the CPU can boost one core 100mhz, compared to the 50mhz of non-x models, so gaming will be better. On the other hand the 2700 is cheaper, and since you're already in high-end, it really doesn't matter what you get if you game. However 2700X has a sexy RGB cooler ;)

hate this confusing stuff.

bmorearty 2 points 5 months ago

I just purchased all the parts for this build but then noticed an apparent incompatibility: the motherboard's MEMORY TYPE is DDR4-2133 / 2400 / 2666 / 2933 / 3200 / 3466, but the memory in the build is DDR4-3000.

Shouldn't it be an exact match for one of the supported memory types on the motherboard?

Brucer6 1 point 5 months ago

My understanding is that it will drop to the nearest supported rate. In this case I believe the RAM will be running at 2933mHz.

So I'm looking to do my first build and this is right on my budget, any tips would be appreciated!

I am currently running an AMD Fx8150 Black series, Asus Sabertooth 990FX & a EVGA GTX570.

Can my MB handle a graphics card or CPU update?

lukasG 1 point 5 months ago

yes, something like a rx580/570 or maybe a gtx1060/1050.

The cpu techinically could be upgraded to a 8350, but it's not really worth it.

Ezikiel 0 points 5 months ago

Your CPU cannot be updated to Ryzen processors, since the socket is older and isn't compatible, but a 1050 ti or RX 570 (Depending on pricing in your country, the 570 is around 50% faster than the 1050 ti) would be a good upgrade from your current GPU. A 1060 would be bottlenecked by your CPU.
