Gaming, Streaming, and Editing Build

This build is intended for those who have an interest in gaming, editing recorded footage, and streaming on a site like Twitch. A PC with these things in mind will have some differing needs than a strictly gaming PC.

CPU and Cooler

For streaming and editing, we're running the new Intel Coffee Lake processor, the i7-8700, which will handle all modern games admirably and features an increased core count over previous Intel generations. The important features that we want from this CPU for streaming and editing are its 6 cores and 12 threads via Hyperthreading (Intel's implementation of Simultaneous Multi Threading - SMT. Hyperthreading adds an additional logical core for each physical core, resulting in double the number of allowed CPU threads. This helps to close the gap between 6- and 12-core processors without breaking the bank or unreasonably sacrificing single-threaded processing power. The extra cores can help performance significantly with both streaming and editing. The i7-8700 includes a stock cooler, but we're opting to use a larger 3rd-party cooler to decrease sound a bit. This CPU isn't overclockable, so we won't be having to manage as much heat.


We're using a parametric filter to constantly select the best-priced motherboard while meeting selected criteria. In this case, we are filtering for Z370 chipsets and 4 DDR4 DIMM slots for future expansion. The compatibility engine will filter out anything not compatible with the build. All motherboards selected will be compatible with the i7-8700 out of the box.


Since editing video can eat up a significant amount of memory quickly, we are using 32GB of memory, with a parametric filter applied to select the best-priced kit of either a 2x16GB or 4x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM. If you are okay with potentially spending more money, you can change the filter to 2x16GB only to leave room for future memory capacity upgrades. However, that will not likely be necessary any time soon.


We're use parametric filters to incorporate an SSD with at least 960GB of space and a minimum of 4TB 7200RPM mechanical storage. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to change those capacities to your heart's desire. You likely will need significantly more storage space than if this were strictly a gaming PC, though.


For our GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 is one of the best price for performance cards on the market and an absolute powerhouse. The GTX 1080 will provide a consistent 60fps on many demanding games like Battlefield 1) at Ultra at 1080p, and even 1440p for some games like Shadow of War. For those interested in VR, the GTX 1080 will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

To keep the noise and temperatures down, we've updated the filter to include a minimum length to avoid "mini" versions of the card, which prioritize fitting into small builds, such as an ITX case. You can choose to use this filter instead, if you want to include the smaller cards for any reason. Note that smaller cards will be louder or hotter - or both.

Due to the high cost of GPUs and low availability, we are using a parametric filter for a GeForce GTX 1080 with a max price set. With patience and vigilance, you can find a video card for around this price, and we want to provide a part list that is more accurate to this concept.


The selected case is black, windowless Phanteks Eclipse P400s. This is the "silent" version of the P400, and it includes sound-dampening foam accordingly. You may find this helpful when editing or to help keep a little more noise out of your microphone while streaming. Being windowless will help reduce noise as well, though if you want a windowed case for aesthetics, you'll likely still be fine. The P400S includes 2 USB 3.0 ports on the front panel, along with 2 120mm fans inside.

The P400S also includes a multicolored LED on the front of the case. You have 8 choices of color, or you can turn it off. Additionally, there is an included fan controller for up to two chassis fans.

Note that this case does not have a 5.25" bay, so traditional optical drives are out. You do not need an optical drive to install an OS or most software. Downloading and flash drives will take care of the bulk of those. If you want an optical drive, you can either purchase an external one, or you can add an internal optical drive to your PCPartPicker list, and our compatibility filter will show only cases that can fit it.

A lack of an external bay also means you can't install a hot swap storage bay that has external access. If you want hot swap capabilities, you'll either want to use an external option like this USB 3.0 one or a different case.

There is also a white version and a gray version. There are also windowed options on the site, if you'd prefer that. If you don't want sound-dampening foam, there are non-silent editions on the site as well. Cases tend to be highly personal choices, so make sure you browse our listed cases to see what suits you.


For our power supply, we're using a parametric selection of five well-reviewed semi or fully modular units, all of which are 80+ Gold certified or above and can provide plenty of power for this build.

At least an AIO would improve things, definitely a 650W PSU for those light overclocks when gaming, as well as the loads on the GPU. Possibly a different case, I have good luck with the 400s and AIO, but editing video might want to go with something by Corsair or Fractal.

Am I wrong for being a little thrown off by the fact it says the SSD is for laptops? Don't know much about computers but looking to build one. Just confused me a little

Not really, but SSD's can be really small so they can fit in laptops. Although for most desktop builders its more a choice of a faster but tad more expensive and less space, or a large hard drive which can hold more information for the same price but has slower startup times on applications like documents, games or other stuff.

If i'm hearing you correctly, you want a gaming build? Yes, I would recommend an 8700k over this on a higher end motherboard that supports overclocking. The gtx 1070 is still a great option as well.

Guys, can someone help me out on a build I have going on? I building a PC for streaming and Editing mainly. What I have so far is MSI Z370-A Pro LGA 1151 motherboard, DEEPCOOL GAMMAXX 400- CPU Cooler, Phanteks Eclipse P400s series case, and CORSAIR TX-M Series TX550M power supply. Can someone please let me know what else I need to complete this build for streaming and editing . I’m thinking about adding this for my build Mushkin REACTOR 960GB Internal Solid State Drive, Intel Core i7-8700K Desktop, HDD 4TB 7200RPM SATA300 64MB ULTARSTA, and Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) . Also not sure about my capture card ???. Do these parts sound good for my build? If so what else do I need ???

Good job. thx for writing. Pros: Good PC with great specs. Cons: A 8700k with a 1080 is a great bundle, but the fact you chose an $80 board and a fan for CPU cooler is just not right. Not only will your PC overheat the motherboard will be overloaded with stress and bottle neck every part you have chosen.

A Ryzen 7 1700 would honestly be better here. With the 2 extra cores and 4 more threads, Ryzen 7 would do much better at gaming, streaming and editing all together.

The case could also be better as P400S has quite horrible airflow. Something like i7 8700 will have stupid high temperatures there. And that will cause the cooler fans to noticeably ramp up, making the silent approach kind of moot. Not to mention there are better cheaper ones.

Not sure if I’m getting the correct info but I heard Ryzen chip performs rather poorly in single threads application. I would rather have a 8700k with that extra base clockspeed

True but this build is also geared towards editing and streaming, this kind of build would also need multi-core performance. While yes Ryzen chips perform worse in single thread applications such as gaming, multi-core is more geared towards applications like video editing and maybe streaming (not an expert but just like to spend my free time looking up tech stuff, take everything i say with a grain of salt).

This has been said many times, the 8700(without k) has a 10-18% advantage over a 1800x in after effects and Premiere and lightroom(till 40%), so please stop to repeat this stupid nonsense.
