Modest Intel Gaming Build

Description

Introduction

The Modest Intel build guide is focused on providing the best performance per dollar on a mid range gaming PC. The components are straightforward to install and the system will run games at 1080p or higher without issue. If you are looking for more of a budget build you can take a look at our Entry Level Intel Gaming Guide

CPU

Our Modest Intel Gaming Build is centered around the Intel Core i5-9400F. Using the included CPU cooler you will be able to keep temperatures and noise low on this locked processor.

Note: If you’re looking for a similar build using an AMD processor, check out our Modest AMD Gaming Build Guide.

Motherboard

We've paired the i5-9400F with a parametric filter of Micro ATX B365 motherboards that support up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, multiple SATA6 ports for storage drives, and front panel USB3.0 ports. The parametric filter is constantly updating to show the best priced product based on the specifications we have set.

Memory

We are filtering for a 2x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM with a speed of at least DDR4-3000 as Intel CPUs scale well with faster memory.

Since the parametric filter picks the lowest priced option available (regardless of color/design), click the "From parametric filter" link to view other options that might better suit your aesthetic preference.

Storage

We're also using a parametric filter that will actively select the best-priced SSD of at least 500GB capacity. Solid states drives are significantly faster than hard drives and one of the easiest ways to improve system responsiveness and load times for both applications and games. Additionally, we're including a 2TB mechanical hard drive in a parametric filter for things like storing media and extra games. Everyone's storage needs differ, so feel free to change the capacity to your usage.

GPU

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is an excellent mid-range graphics card that will let you play any popular game available today at 1080p or 1440p, including Fortnite, PUBG, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Apex Legends.

To keep the noise and temperatures down, the filter requires a minimum length to avoid "mini" versions of the card, which prioritize fitting into small builds, such as an ITX case. It also requires a minimum number of 2 fans to avoid "blower" style cards, which usually do not cool the card as well. You can choose to use this filter instead, if you want to include the smaller cards for any reason. Note that smaller cards will be louder or hotter - or both.

Case

The Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L is a Micro ATX mini tower case with 2x front panel USB 3.0 Gen 1 ports and fits full-size graphics cards without issue. It provides several cable management holes and patterned magnetic dust filters for easy removal and cleaning. The Q300L also supports six different mounting locations for the front panel USB and headphones ports.

PSU

For our power supply, we're using a parametric selection of well-reviewed fully and semi-modular units, all of which will provide more than enough power for this system.

How upgradable will this build be? Will this build still be viable in a few years if it takes me a year to buy all the parts?

  • 4 points

Why bother with anything higher than 2666 ram with that CPU?

  • 0 points

Higher frequency ram can increase the minimum fps you hit in games.

  • 8 points

Even when the motherboard only supports up to 2666?

  • 1 point

Will the ram that is in there now still work with the motherboard??

Will I need to buy anything else to have this work after it's built? (I'm new at this any recommendations would be highly appreciated)

  • 2 points

You will need some sort of Operating system, usually Windows 10, which is about 120 dollars. I would definitely suggest the full licence, rather than OEM. An OEM licence is non transferable, so you could end up having to buy another licence if you upgrade in the future.

Also, things you may have already, but still need:

  1. Monitor. Look for a 1080p or 1440p monitor, with at least 60 Hz refresh rate. If you are really saving up, a 20 dollar used TV with an hdmi port would work for a while, but doesnt really look all that great, so continue to save up for a monitor.
  2. Keyboard.
Most gamers prefer a mechanical keyboard, and while the cheap one that came with your dad's Dell 5 years ago will work, you should definitely keep saving.
  3. Mouse. See keyboard, same applies.
  4. Headphones/headset. You need to be able to hear your games, and this is the way you do that. A headset is just headphones with a microphone attached, which is great for voice chat, either in game or through Discord.

That's all i can think of RN, feel free to ask me any more Questions.

For this, will these extra add-ons be good and compatible with the PC:

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5445990

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2021647

I am guessing this game will run Rainbow Six Siege at decent settings as well?

Cheers, George.

That mouse and keyboard look awesome, and will work great. The monitor is kinda basic, and old. It only has D-sub and vga inputs, neither of which are output by the graphics card. There are adapters, but a newer monitor would be better.

  • 1 point

Can I get a 4k monitor then? I am not intensive gamer, but mostly will watch high resolution videos and photo editing. I guess I will need to tune down the gaming option when playing games?

  • 1 point

That GPU would struggle to play games at 4k, i would get either a 1440p or 1080p monitor, ive never tried the 1660ti but if you hate low fps then i would get a high refresh rate 1080p monitor like 144hz

  • 1 point

Ok cool, thanks, will I need anything to connect to WiFi or is that in the motherboard?

  • 1 point

You will need an additional wifi card with most motherboards. Some include wireless networking, but most, especially budget ones, dont. So something like this is what you need. https://pcpartpicker.com/products/wireless-network-card/#sort=price&page=1 I would suggest a PCI-e card, rather than a usb dongle.

Will a 2015 imac work well for the monitor?

  • 1 point

Maybe, if we are thinking the same thing.

https://www.fonepaw.com/recorder/use-imac-as-monitor-for-pc.html

Techinically yes, but it isnt the most elegant solution but yes. I wouldnt use this as your main display, because incompatibilities migh be there, or even pop up later

  • 1 point

If you want wireless connectivity you will either need to buy a wireless card or use a motherboard with it built in.

  • 2 points

Do you have any recommendations for good options for these?

  • 2 points

Maybe a dumb question, but does this have an Ethernet port? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a good network card?

Hi I'm new here. How would you put this build together?

  • 2 points

Check out some tutorials on youtube. Any of the TechTubers How to Build a PC videos from the last 3-4 years should be able to help you from start to finish. I'd recommend watching more than one to compare their different methods, but overall its very straight forward. I built my first one about 3 years ago with no help, and just those videos and it turned out great.

Probably due to the parametric filter, but the motherboard won't always support DDR4-3000+ memory. Currently I see a Gigabyte board that supports max 2666 memory. May want to update the filter a bit.

Sorry I got another question: can I replace the power supply with "EVGA SuperNOVA G3 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply"? This is listed in this build https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/xM7Ycf/great-amd-gamingstreaming-build. It has a much larger number of purchase compared with the "Corsair RMx (2018) 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply", and once in Newegg it's only sold at $82 (out of stock though). So I am thinking if it's compatible with the other specs then I would go with this one.

This might be a tricky question, but is the MSI GTX 1660Ti Gaming X the best (in performance) GPU that have been listed in the build ever? I already bought all the other parts, except for GPU. I want a good one (comparable to the level listed here), it can be a bit more expensive but also should performs better.

  • 1 point

Getting an CXM V2 instead of the Phanteks AMP or just a regular CX.

Getting 1660TI instead of 1660S, 1660TI performs the same as 1660 Super but is more expensive.

So I will be ditching the case for this build (I have a 3D printer and am making my own custom), so I guess I will need to buy some additional cooling power.

Question is: would water cooling be overkill here? I was thinking about taking my case into the aqua style aesthetically speaking so I'd like that kind of synergy, but I also don't want to be the guy that slaps a $200 spoiler on a 2004 corolla. God bless and thank you
