Description

Gotta get on the AMD hype train, amirite? I live in China, so i ordered all my hardware via taobao. Things came pretty quickly. There is a slight mark up in price, but nothing too bad, give or take + 50-80USD (total). I built this new rig because i moved my old rig down to a new flat i got in an adjacent city. Somethings in this build i reused - the monitor, OS, and 3TB HDD. Clocked the RAM @ 2666mhz. - I tried getting it higher, but it failed every time. I believe this has to do with the MOBO limits. CPU multiplier to 39. - I successfully overclocked it to 4.0ghz but whenever i tried 4.1ghz it would fail to boot, so i decided to clock it down to 3.9ghz to be safe. The Asus x370-PRO, projects the CPU temperatures to be around +20c. This doesn't make me very happy :( I think it can be fixed via a BIOS update but i'm not too sure. Overall, pretty happy with the build. Haven't done any bench marking. So far i've only installed frequently used software. Don't know if i'd ever push this rig to it's full potential. I do some photography, trying to get into some music producing, but i'm mainly going to be using the computer for office work. Occasionally play some Dota. Even though my monitor is only 60hz, dota registers at 120fps @ 1440p Max graphics, that's nice to know. I'd say not bad for my first build (previous rig was built by a shop, parts were selected by me). The S340 elite makes cable management ridiculously easy. real MVP.

Part Reviews

CPU

Solid beast, 16 CPU - 8 core @ 3.9Ghz no sweat.

CPU Cooler

Best looking full-bearing CPU cooler imho. Matches the black and white theme i have going on. Very silent, very good

Motherboard

Biggest regret in my entire build. Projects CPU temps to be way higher than reality. Limits RAM overclocking to 2666mhz only, in an age where most RAMs have speeds of 3000mhz - 3200mhz. Unable to break the 4.0ghz barrier for my cpu, don't know whether this is the MOBOs fault though. BIOS looks flash so that's a +1

Memory

At first i thought the LEDs were RGB. Little did i know it was a fixed LED color, and because my RAM is red, i had to adjust the rest of the RGB colors in my rig to red to match its color scheme. Speeds are great even though i'm not pushing the gear to its full potential. Looks pretty, significantly cheaper than dominator. pretty good price for value.

Storage

Blazing speeds. But tbh, the difference between a regular SSD and a m.2 might not be noticeable to some. Only until you register the number do you realize. The difference in experience is nowhere near HDD > SSD. SSD > m.2 SSD is nice, but i wouldn't say it breaks the game.

Video Card

great price for value. haven't pushed this bad boy yet, i'm sure it would do great things in the future.

Case

10/10 cable management, 7/10 airflow. best chassis i've ever owned, what more can i say.

Power Supply

Full modular at a decent price. Great PSU if you're only running a single GPU and are not looking to push your CPU, RAM, and GPU too hard.

Monitor

had this beauty for a couple of years now. serves me well.

Thanks!

I would very much recommend either picking up a couple intake fans or use the the fan in the top slot at the front for intake.

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

Thanks for the advice! i totally overlooked that at the beginning. I realized my mistake the second i finished unpacking, initially i thought that the s340 came with 2 front intake fans, and because it doesn't i've ordered some and theyre on their way. As well as some custom cables sleeves. going to look sexy af

Stereotypical_Whale 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

oh cool, which fans did you order? Also where are you getting the sleeved cables from?

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

hey man, sorry, totally missed your question. I got 2 noctua's nf-14 industrial for the front airflow. Should arrive sometime this week. Got my cable sleeves on taobao. It's really hard to navigate if you don't know Chinese. Heres a link if you're still interested: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z09.2.0.0.SuoMWz&id=16837813201&_u=e2je6f7ld80b

Stereotypical_Whale 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

oh cool, do they have a good reputation?

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

they are pretty reputable in China. Don't let the price on the link fool you. They use that link as a common denominator for charging. I paid 320 RMB for my cables, so after talking to one of their sales staff on QQ they directed me to that link and told me to order 32 of them.

What are CPU Temps, with a modest overclock under load?

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Hey sorry for the late reply; i haven't checked my account in a while. I'd say after running my rig for a year i get temps around the low 60s (Celsius) underload.

illegaltoast 2 points 16 months ago

1700X rarely hits over 4 Ghz, it's not the board's fault. Also, the board IS rated for higher speed RAM. Try fiddling with the settings some more - you're probably just doing it wrong.

SpacemanSpliff 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

In fairness to the motherboard, all B350/X370 motherboards have the same problems right now. And all 3 of the specific things you pointed out are rooted in the Ryzen firmware and the B350/X370 chipset from AMD. Hardly anyone has gotten any board to run RAM at 3200, most are lucky to hit 2933, and I have yet to hear of anyone hitting 4.1 on a Ryzen. The firmware of the chipset has to be updated to report accurate temps to monitoring like programs like HW Info. These are pretty much universal limitations of this generation of the Zen architecture... and all things I really hope AMD fixes and gets to market with Ryzen 2nd gen in the next year or so... If they get 2nd gen Zen done timely and correctly, that'd be enough for me to switch back from Intel. I would hate to see them drop the ball again and see another decade pass before we see competition in the CPU market.

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Hey sorry for the late reply; i haven't checked my account in a while. Thanks for bringing all those points to light. I have the same hopes as you regarding AMD's 2nd Gen Zen chips. I know they've been on the market for a few months but i haven't been in the loop, I have no idea on the current Zen chips performance + stability.

XreskipX 1 point 18 months ago

can the gpu light up white? im thinking about getting it too!

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

yes it can, you need to download the Trixx software from sapphire if you're thinking about buying the saphire rx580.

XreskipX 1 point 18 months ago

thanks :)

XreskipX 1 point 18 months ago

if you wouldnt mind could you show a pic of it with white leds if not I understand ;3;

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

Sure. But as i have written in my review, the RAM i bought are unable to change in color.

XreskipX 1 point 18 months ago

thanks I appreciate it

Senju21 1 point 18 months ago

Why 4 stars on the GPU? I'm thinking of getting this exact one so I'm curious.

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

i should've gave it 5 stars, i really can't see anything wrong with it. I wished they added a front HDMI port so that i could've made use of the front HDMi on the s340 for VR.

Donutman125 1 point 18 months ago

What temps are your CPU getting under load? I'm getting the same CPU and fan.

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

CPU is great, i regret not opting for a better motherboard. I've heard better things with MSI x370. Perhaps you can push the OC further with that board and a good PSU. My CPU temps projected aren't reliable due to ASUS faulty MOBO temp projections. When the computer is idle it record 63c, when in reality it's more like 40c maybe less (it feel incredibly cool). Judging by the heat, i'd assume its around 60c when underload. Fan is fantastic, great to look at.

ChrisBowler 3 points 18 months ago

I don't think it's the motherboard. It's the Ryzen 7 1700x. Check this out: http://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/103450-some-amd-ryzen-cpus-run-hot-reported/

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 18 months ago

thanks man, haven't read that before. Nice to know. Here are some boards on reddit regarding the x370-pro. most people seem to be running into the same problem, however, flashing a BIOS update might help. https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/6119ee/finally_a_new_bios_for_asus_prime_x370pro/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/5y8ahp/how_is_the_asus_prime_x370pro/

rhombae 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

Just curious, what program are you looking at your CPU temps on? I have a 1700X too and it does run with a 20 C higher offset, but if you look at the temps in the official Ryzen Master utility it reports the right temperature.

ChrisBowler 1 point 18 months ago

Well hopefully anyway as I just ordered that motherboard!

Donutman125 1 point 18 months ago

That's all I need to know, My X370 Taichi paired with this cooler will look great :D

KingKookie 1 point 18 months ago

+1 for taobao

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

damn right!

riftking 1 point 18 months ago

Hey there, I know you're not really fully pushing the rx580, but could you tell me how loud this one gets whilst gaming? Thanks :)

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

After using the Trixx software to adjust the speeds of the GPU fan, i can tell you: 0 - 40% very quiet, almost silent 40-60% you start to hear the fans buzzing very faintly. 60+% the higher you go the louder it'll get. At 100% it is very audible. That's my opinion on this.

riftking 1 point 18 months ago

wow thanks for that speedy reply :D . what rpm % would you say it stays at during long gaming sessions...50? more? thanks a lot

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 18 months ago

well, it doesn't get loud when i have a ton of background software running + playing dota, however it does get a little warm. Not hot though.

riftking 1 point 18 months ago

thanks :)

dRumMzZ 1 point 18 months ago

Really cool-looking build! I'm gearing up for a very similar one, but since this is my first build I want to figure out all the kinks before-hand.
You have something on yours that caught my attention (sorry if these are dumb questions):
The RX 580's power connectors are 6+8 right ? If so, what is your setup regarding those 6 and 8 pin sleeved cables? Is your 6 pin sleeved extension (GPU) connected to a 6+2 cable (PSU) with the 2 pin part "hanging out"?

I'm looking to get a 520W Seasonic M12II that has 6+2 power connectors/cables and I don't know if leaving the +2 pin connector hanging out could lead to power failures.

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

hey sorry for the late reply. from my knowledge it will not run into power failures. The 2PIN is indeed hanging out in my build, and it doesn't affect the rig in any sort of way, you just have to cable manage it to look good.

dRumMzZ 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks for replying still, I asked around and got the same reply!

7tao submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

np :)

MattWeiler 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

First off, nice build :) I'm planning a Ryzen build later this year, and yours is a great inspiration.

Have you already, or are you planning to, upgrade the MOBO bios? If yes, can you tell us if that fixes the CPU temperature readings?

I read your other comments and I couldn't find your reasoning for saying why you think the temperature readings are off... why do you think that they are?

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

Thanks for the compliment, Yes i am actually looking to flash update my bios, but it seems as though the newer versions are not too stable yet. I'm waiting for a BIOS version which can OC my RAM and CPU to its full potential and be stable. i believe the reason why there is a temperature offset is due to a bug and the manufacturer's poor foresight for ryzen master compatibility and stability.

MattWeiler 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Fair enough.

It's gotta be difficult being an early Ryzen adopter. I hope it runs stable for you :)

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

so far so good.

MattWeiler 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Nice build :)

Have you ran any recent BIOS updates? If yes, are you able to get the RAM running at higher speeds and did it fix the temperature readings?

7tao submitter 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Hey sorry for the late reply; i haven't checked my account in a while. I flashed my BIOS to the latest version a few months ago. I forget what version it was. The temperature readings have been fixed. However, i can only run my RAM @ 3000

The vendor who sold it to me gave me an AM4 adapter. I assume it depends on the store your buy it from, cause the AM4 adapter came in a separate box.
