Description

In my consulting business I need to have backup of a lot of data. My own data I backup to AWS. But for various reasons I can't backup customer data to public clouds, and I have quite a lot of this data. My old solution was WD NAS, but it died. I looked around for alternatives and UnRAID looked exactly what I need. In addition to being NAS and supporting various backup protocols it is also Docker containers host and VMs host, including VMs requiring hardware pass through. So I build a server for it. I only used parts that I already had available, so some part choices may not make sense. I'm still in a process of setting all the software up, so far everything is going smoothly.

your trying to say you have 15 ssd's in here?

Actually 16 SSDs, 6 SATA and 10 M.2 NVME.

so 96 terabytes of storage? assuming they are all 2 terabytes

No, 16 disks each 2TB is 32TB of storage.

Nice. I'm not sure why a NAS server needs a beefy GPU, a fancy case, and a light show with water pipes. Normally they run in a rack tower in some basement. But I guess it can serve as a decorative piece.

Also at this price point, it may have been worth it to consider enterprise SSDs and a proper server platform with a UPC battery and all the extra jazz for reliability. But hey, if desktop platform comes out cheaper, maybe it makes more sense.

I have this question too. Is it your personal rig too? Gaming, etc?

No, not for gaming. But I plan to run up to 8-10 containers and/or VMs on it, in addition to being NAS and backup server. That is why I need powerful CPU and a lot of RAM. I will have a VM that needs fast GPU passed through as well. There is a second x1 GPU (Nvidia 710) which will act as a console in this case. All my systems run off good UPSs. Building or buying equivalent enterprise class server is significantly more expensive.

Water cooling is just a hobby of mine so I build custom loops for all my systems. They also run significantly cooler and quieter than on-air or even AIO rigs. Light show is completely unnecessary of cause so I actually have all lights off, just turned them on for photos.

Well, it looks great. You've done a good job. It's interesting that unraid is allowing you to create virtual machines. I knew it was a NAS os, but apparently it's also a type 1 hypervisor. Looking at the docs, it looks like it's being shipped with standard KVM you'd find in most linux distributions. This alone makes it more useful than FreeNas imo.

Yes, they use KVM.

This is a feature waiting to happen.

This whole thing is phenomenal. I've been dreaming of something like this for years. How many VMs are you planning to have run off this thing?

Between containers and VMs I hope to have around 8 or 10.

My goodness! This is insane. Am curious why you did not go for 8tb hdd.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that OP is running a form of RAID, and in RAID, you typically have a copy of the data on another drive, in case the first drive fails. The less drives you have, the higher probabality that all drives fail at the same time.

That it definitely correct. Also I had bad experience with rotating drives, the failure rate is high. That is why I'm trying to go all SSDs.

Curious as to why you chose the RX VEGA 64 and not a different GPU?

  • 1 point

II had plans to build hackintosh and new that Vega is compatible. I ended up not building it but already bought this GPU. For this build I will need powerful GPU for one of the VMs and just use what I already had,

+1 for build! -1 for not showing entire set up!😡 why does everyone only upload a couple of pictures? More pictures please!

You are right, Just being lazy. Will correct it with new pictures icouples of days.

ngl its looks amazing but at the same time its insanely overkill for a server but your money not mine :)
