Description
Wanted a good processor and 32 gigs of ram, didn't need anything too expensive, big, or flashy.
A gamer friend talked me into the video card, don't regret it.
Noctua cooler installed post pics. It was ok-quiet with the stock cooler, but I was aiming for near silent and the Noctua definitely fits the bill. Also has additional 1 TB HDD that I had in a box that I installed for data storage.
Everything went together easily, running Ubuntu with no problems.
Actually there is a problem -- how much I enjoyed obsessing over parts and building the thing!
Part Reviews
CPU
quick and easy. done it's data crunching job well so far.
CPU Cooler
really quiet, easy to install, nice that it comes with paste, extra screws for thicker fan, low noise adapter, etc.
Motherboard
overall good inexpensive board, IO shield is flimsy and super shiny.
Had some trouble with one of the M2 slots, just used the other one.
Memory
nice to have 32 gigs, does the job, no complaints.
Video Card
easily drives two monitors, not really a gamer, so probably overkill but for just over $100 seemed better than the cheaper options. let's the cpu just calculate... A bit quirky with Ubuntu 18.04, works a treat with 19.04 no additional drivers or anything else necessary.
Case
Great case, looks sweet, easy to build in, plenty of ways and places to mount fans. A little wide (wanted a smaller footprint) but that made it easier to build in for sure.
Case Fan
Wisper quiet, low rpm, but only on or off (3 pin connector, that's on me, didn't really understand at the time). not brown!
