Description

Style + Beast = Styeast

This is very long build. I had a lot of problems with the Asus X99 AII motherboard. It's been more than half a year after I purchased everything. Asus really wasted a lot of my time on sending the mb back and forth for more than 5 times. Luckily, MSI works perfectly. This worked on the first try. However, the startup is still a bit slow. But hey, this works. Great job MSI.

This will be the main setup for CG work; hence, I got the quadro card and the xeon processor. FYI, it you guys are into rendering for 3D content, CPU should be the main focus. Some renderers don't use GPU. I also compared the rendering with CPU and GPU. They are the same.

The main cost I was able to cut on the market value are the cpu, gpu, and the Intel SSD. I bought the CPU used from ebay. This isn't the entirely legit version, but it really works well with the 18 core. The model number is not shown, instead it shows 0000. I asked the seller. The seller told me that it's an engineering sample. As for the GPU, I got the Nvidia M6000 not the PNY version. I couldn't find it in PCpartpicker. I bought this new from a guy on Craigslist. This was a huge risk. I made sure to bring it into a computer store to check it. It was legit, and the guy was nice. Intel SSD was from a guy I found on ebay. This was a bit under the market value. That's why it's $800.

I waited for a long time not only because of the Asus mb, but also I waited for corsair rgb fans and the In Win 805 Infinity. I wanted to make the entire setup RGB. These fans look nice; however, they are kind of loud, and the plastic feels a bit cheap. If you turn the the fan speed to a minimum, they are quiet enough for me. The CPU temperature is really low with the NZXT liquid cooler.

Everything here is new except for the CPU. I am glad that I was able to cut the cost to less than $5000.

That case is so infectious. You had better strap that beotch down it looks like its going to hit light speed any second. You might want to dial down the hyper drive ;) Is your startup slow because of all that ram or something else? What was the deal with the ASUS board and the reason why the MSI worked the first time?

My pc is slow in startup possibly because of the ram. I'm not sure. The asus mb always showed the q code 19, whixh means it's the memory problem. I even bought the vendor qualified ram to test it out. Same problem happened. The ssd with the os was working fine in another pc. Therefore, I can tell it's definely the asus mb. As for why the MSI worked , I'm not sure. I just saw great reviews and how others had the same problem and bought Msi mb and it worked for them. I took a chance because newegg was also offering warhammer game which is the game that I wanted.

Air flow is slightly bad, but using the a good aio cooler definitely keeps it cool.

OMG, you used my favorite case! It's so classy I can't handle it. And the build is neat to match it. Bravo.

Would you consider getting a Quadro P or Radeon Pro down the line? I admire your courage in getting these used parts. I wouldn't have the balls. xD

Nice build though, it's great to see someone build a PC for legit work instead of GAMING, and I'm sick of the PCMR subreddit screaming over 1080 Ti 7600K builds for "gaming". IMO that just means "I don't do anything productive and I build a PC that can do nothing except play CS GO marathons". I love the case! Good work! +1

Sorry for the late reply. I don't check my account often enough. Hope this information is still helpful. From the information that I gathered online, Radeon Pro doesn't seem to have any outstanding numbers in coin mining, rendering, or gaming compared to Gtx 1070 and 1080. As for Quadro P, they seem to look great on paper. I'm not certain about them because I haven't done much research or had any experience with them. For Quadro M6000, I was luckily enough to buy it a lot less than the market price. That's why I gave it a try. Unfortunately, it doesn't meet my expectations on rendering. You can look into 1070, 1080 and the new Titan X. The new Titan X has almost the same spec as the Quadro P6000 but cost a lot less. Hope this still helps.

is Xeon great for cg 3d modelling and rendering in zbrush, maya, marmoset toolbag, etc. compared to i7? thanks

  • 1 point

I'm not sure about modeling, but I think it doesn't require that much computing power. For rendering, you would need more cores for faster rendering. Most Xeons have more cores than i7 unless you plan on getting the 10 core i7.

Do you work with Cg the programming language or just work with computer graphics?

I only work with computer graphics. Mainly focusing on VFX compositing.

Did you have to update the bios to accommodate the xeon e5-2697?

  • 1 point

I don't remember. I did update the bios. I was having trouble with another motherboard and I was told that the newest bios should make it work, so I updated this one.

I also ordered almost the same cpu you did. I personally didn't have to update the bios on my msi x99a sli mobo.

I build this before p6000 came out, m6000 is good enough for me. I don't think I can see the difference on rendering between the both.
